Kirkkonummi’s centre is now undergoing comprehensive renovation. Although the temporary solutions it causes are inconvenient, the impact of the renovation being carried out can be measured in decades. Kirkkonummi’s future is being built today, and we have a rare opportunity to influence what it will be like.
Why is Kirkkonummi’s position exceptionally strong?
Right next to the capital region, along good rail connections, Kirkkonummi’s position is exceptionally strong. While the majority of Finland suffers from population loss, Kirkkonummi and the broader Helsinki metropolitan area is attracting ever more new residents. Although competition between municipalities for new residents is not a zero-sum game, some municipalities fare better in this competition than others. For most people, the municipal centre is the heart into which the municipality condenses, and that is precisely why its development is so important.
Kirkkonummi’s position is exceptionally strong.
I had the honour of attending the topping-out ceremony of Lyyra, the House of Culture. From next year, Lyyra will offer premises for both of Kirkkonummi’s upper secondary schools, the music school, the visual arts school and the adult education centre. The adjacent Lyyra and main library Fyyri will, together with Rovastinpuisto, form a cluster of culture, education and events in Kirkkonummi that has no equal in the surrounding area. Not every municipality has modern, excellent facilities for organising both indoor and outdoor events.
A vibrant municipality is not merely a place where one goes to work or sleep. One must also enjoy being there. Culture and community play an extremely important role in this. Good premises for these are now nearing completion — next we need to start using them. From large touring productions to local associations.

What does Lyyra offer Kirkkonummi?
Lyyra is not just an educational institution; it is an investment in the future of the entire municipality, and in particular in the young people studying there. It offers young people modern learning environments, but also a space for the entire community for meetings, events and community life. Lyyra can act as a revitaliser for the municipality, attracting new residents and businesses to the area. Now we have the opportunity to build Kirkkonummi into the gem of Uusimaa.
