Municipal elections are coming around again. At the time of writing, there are fewer than three months until they take place. Municipal elections are perhaps the finest and most important of all our elections, because we vote for local candidates to decide on local matters. On each of our everyday lives and the direction they will take over the next four years.
Local politics is, in the end, about everyday matters.
What does local politics mean in everyday life?
Local politics can sometimes feel complicated (and sometimes it is), but in the end it is about completely everyday matters. About where the local school or day-care centre will be. About where a road will be built and where a sports field will go. About whether young people will have space and opportunities to be safe. About whether we are investing in the future and in growth.
What future does Kirkkonummi have ahead?
Kirkkonummi is in the fortunate position that our finances are not in acute crisis and the municipality’s population is on a growth trajectory. We have a fast rail connection to Helsinki as well as good road links for those who travel by car. Now is, however, the moment when we decide what our future will look like. Will we get young people’s educational attainment rising again, will Finnish — and particularly Kirkkonummi — civilisation and culture survive budgetary pressures, and will we be able to integrate our new residents into our outstanding municipality? Will Kirkkonummi still be riding the crest of the wave for the next 700 years?
Giving up one’s own time to look after shared matters is always a fine thing.
In local elections, we residents choose from among ourselves those whom we believe can best promote the interests of Kirkkonummi and its residents. I also want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have stood for election before and all those now putting themselves forward. Including those with whom I disagree. Sacrificing one’s own time and energy to advance shared matters and democracy is always a fine and admirable thing.
I have written in more detail about municipal election themes: on education as the municipality’s most important task , on the public transport cost crisis and on the need for a vibrant centre for a growing municipality .

A growing municipality needs a vibrant heart
Kirkkonummi's centre renovation is a golden opportunity. A vibrant centre attracts residents and businesses — and improves the municipality's finances.

Assumptions are not worth knowledge
Parties market themselves with images. It pays to challenge candidates on what their claims are actually based on.
